Nearly 30 years ago, Royal Caribbean leased a piece of paradise in the Bahamas called Little Stirrup Cay. One of the first things it did was rename the 140-acre islet CocoCay.
It was a gift to cruise guests, one that allowed them a full day to relax on white sand beaches gently sloping down to crystalline blue waters. In time, kayaking, parasailing, snack bars, nature trails and more were added to enhance the visit, and environmental improvements earned Gold-Level Eco-Certification by Sustainable Travel International.
Now Royal Caribbean is embarking on a new enhancement project called Perfect Day at CocoCay, a $200 million first-step in the creation of the Perfect Day Island Collection, seven distinctive island experiences “to deliver the ultimate family destination in the Caribbean with the perfect combination of thrills and chills for everyone … giving adventurous vacationers first-time experiences that will top any bucket list.”
In announcing the ambitious plan, Royal Caribbean International President and CEO Michael Bayley said:
“At Royal Caribbean, it’s not just about the hardware. It’s true that our new ships are technological and engineering marvels in their own right, and offer a multitude of unexpected experiences. Our destinations are an equally important part of the cruise vacation.
“We are introducing Perfect Day Island Collection to ensure that we deliver the most memorable vacation for adventure-seekers on land, as well as onboard our ships.”
By the time the CocoCay additions and improvements are completed, the island will feature:
- The tallest waterslide in North America
- The Caribbean’s largest wave pool
- A helium balloon ride to 450 feet for the highest view in the Bahamas
- The largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean
And these superlative features are just a few of the Perfect Day complement of adventure activities.
There will be a 1,600-foot zip line high above CocoCay’s harbor; more than two dozen water cannons; a geyser spouting 80-plus feet in the air; a maze of other waterslides including twin Dueling Demons drop slides, the fully vertical Screeching Serpent, the coiling Green Mamba, a zero-gravity slide for four and the four-lane Splash Speedway racing slides.
Adventure Pool has the kids covered, challenging them with an obstacle course of lily pads, a rock-climbing wall and rope swings.

“When you name a place Perfect Day, you’re making a big, bold claim, but it’s one we’re going to deliver on,” Bayley said. “Once Perfect Day at CocoCay is complete, it will be unlike anything else in the world.”
The CocoCay enhancements will roll out in phases, beginning September 2018 with the completion of a new pier, and most of the rest will launch in spring 2019. Coco Beach Club, the final experience to be finished, is set to open in November 2019.
The other components of the Perfect Day Island Collection – including destinations in Asia, Australia and elsewhere in the Caribbean – will be announced later.
