How Royal Caribbean Group is Reinventing Waste Management at Sea

With advanced technologies and a forward-looking vision, Royal Caribbean Group is charting a new course for cutting-edge waste management. Central to their mission is SEA the Future, a bold initiative that focuses on sustaining the planet, energizing communities, and accelerating innovation by harnessing state-of-the-art technology, proactive waste prevention, and revolutionary at-sea waste-to-energy solutions.

Since launching their first recycling program in 1992, the Group has made remarkable progress—today, approximately 85% of onboard waste is either reused, repurposed, or recycled—diverting millions of pounds from landfills. Read on to explore how this vacation industry leader is steering toward a greener, more sustainable future on the open seas.

The Green Hub Program

The Green Hub program, a pivotal element of the waste management strategy, acts as a bridge between the Group’s expansive fleet and local waste facilities ashore. Onboard, waste is processed through state-of-the-art facilities and is prepared for onward treatment, where it’s offloaded to local facilities, such as recycling plants or waste-to-energy plants.

Through the Green Hub program, the company collaborates with local vendors and waste-to-energy facilities to verify that waste is properly recycled or repurposed, ensuring it doesn’t end up in landfills.

The Group works closely with more than 30 ports to safely and responsibly offload waste, ensuring that the environmental impact remains minimal in every destination they visit.

Advanced facilities and crew engagement

Royal Caribbean Group’s dedicated crew is at the heart of waste management success. Trained to manage waste efficiently, the crew operates advanced onboard stations that process waste in environmentally responsible ways. These stations include:
  • Shredders and crushers to reduce waste size.
  • Incinerators that safely convert waste into ash.
  • Compactors optimize space and reduce volume.
This infrastructure enables crew to handle waste onboard responsibly and prepare it for sustainable disposal ashore.

Waste prevention

Prevention is just as vital as waste management. Royal Caribbean Group actively collaborates with suppliers to minimize packaging and waste generation. One innovative example is the WIN on Waste program, which uses Artificial Intelligence to predict and prevent food waste before it occurs. By analyzing consumption patterns and operational data, the Group can optimize inventory and meal planning, reduce unnecessary waste, and support broader sustainability goals.

Pioneering waste-to-energy at sea

Arguably the most groundbreaking aspect of the Group’s efforts is the world’s first waste-to-energy plant at sea. This pioneering project exemplifies Royal Caribbean Group’s leadership in sustainable innovation, allowing the conversion of waste onboard directly into energy. This technology not only reduces waste volume but also generates energy that can be used to power ship operations, creating a more self-sufficient and environmentally friendly cruise experience.

Charting a sustainable future

Royal Caribbean Group’s comprehensive approach to waste management, including prevention programs, utilizing advanced processing stations and facilities from ship to shore, and leveraging cutting-edge waste-to-energy technology, is setting new industry standards for responsible tourism.

Pioneering new solutions and expanding sustainability efforts is at the heart of Royal Caribbean Group’s commitment to continuous improvement for sustaining the planet, energizing the communities they visit, and accelerating innovation. To see Royal Caribbean Group’s waste management efforts, check out this video on the process.
