Vacationers know all about Royal Caribbean Group’s robotic bartenders serving up specialty cocktails and spirits, but what they may not know of are the latest robots being deployed across some of the Group’s ships to do a very important job – hull cleaning.
As guests board Icon of the Seas or Star of the Seas, they may catch a glimpse of the new resident robot making its way along the ship’s hull, scrubbing it free of the algae that can build up as the ships sail the seas.
Deployed from the ship while it’s docked at port, this new robot pilot program is the latest in the Group’s energy efficiency efforts, which scrutinizes every kilowatt of energy used. Maintaining a ship’s hull in optimal condition allows it to glide through the water with less resistance and makes voyages more efficient.
The hull-cleaning robots are just one of the Group’s long-term efforts to keeping the ship’s hulls clean; using specialized coatings and paints and employing scuba divers to clean and remove the algae build-up are other methods.
Royal Caribbean Group’s new robotic hull cleaner supports the ship’s team of specialists — from engineers to technicians and even scuba divers — in these ongoing maintenance efforts to keep the ship sparkling clean.
The system consists of the robotic cleaner and its accompanying boat, which resides onboard the ship and has a built-in filtration system to capture the cleaned build-up.
Whatever the innovation may be, Royal Caribbean Group is working with the industry’s best minds and partners to accelerate sustainable ship designs that will help sustain the planet and help it
SEA the Future.
