A Look into Star of the Seas with Royal Caribbean’s President & CEO, Michael Bayley

Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean’s President and CEO, is preparing to welcome the second Icon Class ship – Star of the Seas – into the Royal family. Check out this exclusive look into Star and find out some of Michael’s favorite things onboard.

Q: Icon of the Seas redefined the ultimate family vacation. Now that Star of the Seas is here, what does that mean for the Icon class and the future of Royal Caribbean’s fleet?

Michael: You know, the term ‘icon’ is often thrown around in corporate circles; it’s more about investments and returns. But for our guests, it’s about experiences. When families step onboard our ships, they’re choosing a blend of ship, destination, and vibe. With Star of the Seas, we’re expanding their options, we’re giving them more beautifully designed ships, more innovative features, more memories waiting to be made. From Icon’s smashing success, the trajectory is clear. When our guests are delighted and our shareholders see the rewards, everyone wins. The Icon Class isn’t just growing; it’s a journey of pushing boundaries, creating products that truly resonate. This is what makes Royal Caribbean a pioneer in the space.

Q: Tell us about the vision and design philosophy behind Star of the Seas. How does it embody the brand’s future ambitions?

Michael: Think of Star as the sister ship to Icon—built on the same DNA but refined through lessons learned. Like our Oasis or Quantum Classes, each iteration takes the core concept and elevates it. Icon was the prototype, and Star is its confident sequel. We made minor tweaks—upgraded restaurant concepts, fresh color palettes, lighting, and layout adjustments - fundamental improvements that derived from real-world feedback. The essence remains the same: a vessel that embodies innovation, fun, and unforgettable memories. It’s about evolution, with each ship building on its predecessor to offer an even more spectacular experience.

Q: What new features and technologies will guests encounter onboard Star of the Seas

Michael: First, Sailor is the number one feature onboard; she’s the ship’s new Chief Dog Officer. She’s adorable and destined to be a fan favorite. Beyond that, we’re constantly refreshing entertainment, like "Back to the Future" the musical, a blockbuster Broadway hit. Restaurants? We swap menus, tweak concepts, keep the experience fresh and exciting. Innovation is ongoing; every voyage is a new chapter. Plus, Star’s connection to Icon, combined with our private destinations: Perfect Day at CocoCay and upcoming destinations including Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, Royal Beach Club Cozumel, Lelepa, and the highly anticipated Perfect Day Mexico—these curated experiences are designed to delight every type of traveler. It’s a seamless blend of thrills and chills, all rooted in more than 50 years of listening to our guests.

Q: Can you talk about the development process of Star? Any milestones or challenges that stand out?

Michael: The journey started back in 2017 with Icon, an ambitious five-to-six-year marathon of design, planning, and collaboration. The pandemic paused us, but it also reinforced our resilience. Building a new class of ship is a massive feat, with conceptualizing, master planning, working with shipyards, and then the construction process, which can take up to two years. Every ship is unique, with its own personality and challenges. The real magic lies in the teamwork between designers, architects, engineers, and everyone that has ever touched the project, overcoming hurdles and creating something truly special. Watching these ships come to life after years of effort is profoundly rewarding.

A few of Michael’s favorite things

Q: What are your personal favorites onboard: restaurants, bars, shows?

Michael: I love Japanese food, so Izumi’s hibachi is top of my list. The vibe, the seafood—absolutely love it. Sorrento’s for pizza? Can’t beat it. Classic comfort food. As for bars, I enjoy the diversity that Star offers: Playmakers for the energy, Coastal Kitchen for its exclusivity, Schooner Bar for its charm. My go-to drink is Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, always on every ship, like an old friend. For shows, I think "Back to the Future" the musical will become my favorite.

Q: Describe your ideal day at sea.

Michael: I’d start with a spin class—gotta stay active. Then a peaceful walk on deck with Sailor, our Chief Dog Officer, in the early morning, before the crowds. Breakfast in the Windjammer—nothing beats it. Later, maybe a coffee at Starbucks, and hanging by the pool. Italian for lunch, followed by a massage and maybe a nap. In the evening, dinner with friends, catching a show, maybe trying my luck in the casino. It’s about balance—relax, indulge, enjoy the moment.

Sneak Peek: Legend of the Seas

Q: Any insider info on Legend of the Seas

Michael: We’re in the midst of choosing a legendary godmother. It’s a bigger challenge with each new ship, but we’re confident it’ll be someone truly special, someone who embodies the spirit of adventure and legacy.

Destinations that define the experience

Q: Tell us about the upcoming destinations—Perfect Day Mexico, Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, Cozumel, Lelepa. What can guests expect?

Michael: Our new Ultimate Destinations portfolio is the ultimate mix of thrill and chill on land, which is what our guests told us they wanted. So, Perfect Day Mexico is next level: longest lazy river, beautiful beaches, the biggest sombrero in the world. The Royal Beach Clubs in Nassau, Cozumel, and Lelepa are curated escapes, designed for ultimate relaxation, bringing beach club energy and vibes to these beautiful locations.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part of delivering a new ship?

Michael: There’s something truly special about seeing years of vision and hard work come to life. The long journey, through ups and downs, late nights, meetings, and teamwork, it all culminates in that moment when the ship sails into port, ready to create memories. It’s a feeling unlike any other; you’re proud, exhilarated, and deeply connected to the legacy of innovation.

As Royal Caribbean continues to chart new waters, one thing is clear: the voyage of discovery, innovation, and unforgettable experiences is just getting started.
